The contract covering the construction of 6 Class-214 submarines at the Gölcük Naval Shipyard Command within the scope of the New Type Submarine Project launched to meet the needs of the Naval Forces Command was signed at the ceremony held on 02 July 2009 at the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries with the participation of Turkish and German officials.
In addition to the National Defence Minister Vecdi Gönül, the Commander of Turkish Naval Forces Admiral Metin Ataç, the Undersecretary for Defence Industries Murad Bayar, the German Defence Ministry Undersecretary Thomas Kossendey, the German Naval Forces Commander Vice-Admiral Wolfgang Nolting, HDW Chairman of Board of Directors Walter Freitag, STM Director General Recep BARUT and the top-level managers of defence industry companies participated in the signature ceremony.
Making a speech at the ceremony, STM’s Director General Recep BARUT said that it is a great honour for STM to take part in this significant and historical project of our Naval Forces Command and our Country.
Saying that STM is a service-dedicated company that provides consultancy services in the areas of defence, energy ,education, health, transportation and homeland security and offers technical support and technology-oriented solutions, BARUT continued his speech as follows: “The tasks that STM will undertake within the scope of the New Type Submarine Project include participation in design activities, making necessary changes on drawings, participation in engineering and system integration activities, increasing national contribution to the project via localization of 18,000 items of materials and manufacturing in the local industry the submarine light hull blocks. STM will also undertake development of the shipyard and battery plant infrastructure, the procurement of materials and services that may be needed by shipyards for submarine construction activities and will supply integrated logistic support documentation and services.”
Extending his gratitude to first of all Admiral Metin ATAÇ, Commander of the Turkish Naval Forces, and to Undersecretary for Defence Industries Murad BAYAR and to all employees of these two organizations for the trust and consideration shown to STM with regard to the tasks that it will undertake within the project scope, BARUT stated that the attainments STM will gain –institutionally, on behalf of Turkey- from the realization of this project will include project management and engineering services capability for submarines, and technological knowledge, experience and capabilities that will allow modernization in the field of submarines and manufacturing of submarine materials and outfittings by the national industry to the maximum extent possible.
BARUT said that STM is fully confident that the technological knowledge, experience and capabilities that will be gained from the project will be attainments that have strategic importance and that will serve Turkey and the Naval Forces throughout the life cycle of the submarines that will be added to the inventories.
Stating that as STM they are greatly honoured with the prospect of working with HDW, the leading company of the world in conventional submarine technologies, BARUT said that they will make all efforts to succeed in this challenging task assumed under the project, and ended his speech after thanking the companies HDW and TETICO for the kindness they have extended to STM and for their constructive approach in the efforts for cooperation.
