STM explained R&D activities at Conference on IT Solutions in Defence Industry

STM participated in the Conference on IT Solutions in Defence Industry organized in Istanbul on October 09, 2009 within the scope of the IT Summit’09.

Believing that today security is not limited only to the military and should enter all areas of life from environment to transportation and to the public sector, STM highlighted the importance and future benefits of R&D Projects on homeland security.

At the conference, which was sponsored by STM, STM Project Manager Nurşen AYAYDIN ASLAN took part as a speaker, and explained the importance of R&D in the Defence Industry, the expectations and how R&D activities are carried out. ASLAN also talked about  the Network Enabled Capability (NEC) concept,  NEC’s objectives and the methods used to achieve these objectives, and gave detailed information on some R&D projects carried out at STM, namely TALOS (Transportable Autonomous Patrol for Land Border Surveillance), OPERAMAR (Interoperable Approach to Maritime Security Management) and TKKBS (Tank Command Control Information System)projects.

Nurşen AYAYDIN ASLAN said that 14 organizations from 10 countries take part in the TALOS Project, which is one of the 8 integration projects approved for support by the EU Commission, and that the Project is coordinated by Polish PIAP, with Israeli IAI responsible for technical management and ASELSAN for Systems Engineering Management.

Saying that the Project launched in June 2008 will have a duration of 4 years with a Project budget of € 20 Million, around € 13 Million of which is provided by the European Commission, ASLAN added that the work share of Turkish companies in this project in which Turkey plays an active role will be 28%, with ASELSAN having 17.4 % and STM having  10.6%.

ASLAN said that the Project is expected to bring about huge improvement with regard to border security through monitoring and management of images and data received from Unmanned Land Vehicles (ULV), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and sensor towers at command control centres, and meet the needs at the highest level, with an aim to ensure land border security in all Europe in the long run.

Saying that the most critical work packages of the TALOS Project, being “Top Level System Architectural Design” and “Development of Command Control Sub Systems”, are being carried out under the leadership of ASELSAN,  ASLAN emphasized that in these packages STM undertakes an important task together with ASELSAN by taking part in identification of system requirements, top level system architecture and development of Command Control Sub System.ASLAN said that the OPERAMAR Project is aimed as a feasibility study to establish the interoperability principles of currently used systems for safety and security of blue borders in the EU, and that 9 companies from 7 different countries are taking part in the Project, in which the French THALES is the Project coordinator.

Saying that the TKKBS Project is a Command Control System used in operation planning, execution, control and follow-up phases from single tank/vehicle to Battalion Task Force level, ASLAN expressed that this Project will form the basis of the Tank Command Control Communication and Information System Subsystem of the ALTAY Project, which is Turkey’s National Main Battle Tank Project.
