Review: Missile Guidance Techniques
 Review : Missile Guidance Techniques

Cengizhan BAHAR from the Systems Department delivered a presentation on “Missile Guidance Techniques” at the “Information Exchange and Technology Platform Seminar” held at STM on October 31, 2009.

In the presentation, missile guidance techniques were explained under three main categories: Self-Guided, Command-Guided and Homing-Guided systems. Technological developments in guidance techniques were described with various examples and comparatively in terms of application areas and jamming methods. It was expressed that when selecting the guidance system, the availability or unavailability of a target detection system (seeker) and its type, as well as whether the seeker/guidance systems are onboard the missile or at the ground station, and the sensor size, target properties etc are effective.

Parallel to missile guidance techniques, the presentation also included guidance phases (launching, intermediate and final phases) and the guidance law algorithm, which can be summarized as the mathematical expression determining the flight path, and described the missile guidance techniques used in various missiles in the world.

The presentation emphasized that today, composite guidance techniques where more than one guidance techniques are used in accordance with the compatible guidance law depending on mission/engagement at every phase of the flight are very popular; some new generation missiles have 2 or 3 different seeker sensors for use under all conditions and in jamming instances, and  simultaneous guidance techniques where more than one guidance techniques are used at the same time have also started to be applied.

The relevant departments of the company take part in the seminars, which are held on the last Saturday of every month and which have been continuing for the last two years.
