Review: Secure RFID System
At the Information Exchange and Technology Platform seminar held on November 21, 2009 at STM, Mehmet Emre ÇİFTÇİBAŞI from the Systems Department delivered a presentation on “RFID Systems, Operational Principles and Security”.

The presentation outlined the operational principles and security aspects of the RFID Technology, which is planned to be used in military systems as a replacement for the barcode technology. The technological infrastructure planned to be developed in Turkey under the R&D Project was explained in detail with the support of examples, in the light of the RFID systems that are becoming widespread around the globe and finding their way into defence industries.

ÇİFTÇİBAŞI’s presentation reviewed the R&D efforts that will be needed for the RFID systems that are planned to be installed in view of the current communication assets in military fields, and summarized the “Secure RFIS System” framework aimed in the short run.

After sample RFID labels were distributed to the audience, the operational principles of a real RFIS system were described, along with physical reading and writing scenarios and simultaneous multi-label reading. Following an outline of the civil systems using RFID technology in Turkey, the presentation ended with the prediction that RFID will start to be used in the near future in the defence industry.
