An Agosta 90B Class Submarine, PNS/M HAMZA (S-139), modernized by STM for the Pakistan Navy, managed to hit and sink a decommissioned frigate with a single torpedo shot.
Turkey's first submarine modernisation export – the Pakistan Agosta 90B Submarine Modernization project – which was carried out under the main contractorship of STM, achieved an important success.
During the SEASPARK-2022 Tactical Exercise, which is held biennially by Pakistan Naval Forces Command, and was carried out between 17 February and 13 March in this year, guided missiles and torpedoes were fired at various targets. One such firing was carried out by the PNS/M HAMZA (S-139) submarine, which was modernised within the scope of Pakistan Agosta 90B Submarine Modernisation Project and delivered to the Pakistan Navy on 29 April, 2021.
Target Destroyed with One Torpedo!
PNS/M HAMZA (S-139), which has been equipped with enhanced engineering capabilities by STM, destroyed a decommissioned TARIQ-class ship (Type 21 frigate) with a single DM-2A4 torpedo shot during a war torpedo attack scenario.
The visiting delegations observed the exercise from the Pakistan Naval Fleet Replenishment Tanker PNS MOAWIN, which was also designed and built by STM and delivered in 2018.
Within the scope of Agosta 90B Submarine Modernization Project, under the main contractorship of STM, the submarine has been successfully upgraded with an Integrated Underwater Command and Control System (IUCCS &C2IS), a Weapon Control System (WCS), Sonar Systems, Periscopes (Attack and Search), an Electronic Warfare, Radar and Ship Data Distribution System, a STMDENGİZ Electronic Chart Display and Information System, Converters, a Steering System and a Chilled Water System. The successful torpedo firing by the PNS/M HAMZA (S-139) submarine was further testament to STM's competence in national and international submarine modernisation projects.
STM won the submarine modernisation tender in 2016 ahead of the French company that designed and built the submarine. It was STMs first export in the field of engineering for such advanced technologies as submarines. Acceptance and delivery of the PNS/M HAMZA (S-139) submarine were completed without any delay, despite the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the modernisation of the two other submarines in the Agosta 90B Submarine Modernization Project, is underway as planned. STM, which has successfully carried out a large-scale modernization abroad on a platform that is not of its own design or production, worked with DNV throughout the Project, a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) and all the modifications performed onboard and on pressure hull were certified by DNV as well.
Great contribution from STM to the exports of the Turkish defence sector
STM, which has been successfully carrying out projects in friendly and brotherly country Pakistan for a long time, is making a significant contribution to the export activities of Turkish defence industries with the mutual trust and cooperation it has developed. STM delivered the Pakistan Navy Fleet Replenishment Tanker PNS MOAWIN in Karachi, as Turkey’s largest military shipbuilding project in terms of tonnage to date. Through this project, 20 Turkish companies made indirect exports.
The workmanship for the production of PNS MOAWIN was provided by Karachi Shipyard Engineering Works (KSEW).
Through the Agosta 90B Submarine Modernization Project, domestic and national systems of companies such as HAVELSAN and ASELSAN were also exported during the modernization process. Having won the trust of the Pakistani Navy, STM is now taking part in the project of the production of four Ada-Class Corvettes for the supply and integration of main propulsion systems, based on its engineering capability.
