Gür-Class Submarine Modernization Project

A contract amendment that expands the scope of the Preveze-Class Submarine Mid-Life Modernization Project to include the Gür-Class (Type 209/1400) Submarine Mid-Life Modernization activities was signed on January 17, 2024, between the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) and the STM–ASELSAN–ASFAT–HAVELSAN Joint Venture (JV).

Under this agreement, the initial phase aims to modernize critical systems of the Gür-Class submarines, including navigation, propulsion, and communication systems, using national and advanced technological capabilities, with the goal of extending the operational lifespan of the submarines. STM has assumed responsibility for system procurement and platform integration, and the project is planned to be completed within six years.

There are four Gür-Class submarines in service with the Turkish Naval Forces since 2004. The submarines undergoing modernization are TCG GÜR, TCG ÇANAKKALE, TCG BURAKREİS, and TCG BİRİNCİ İNÖNÜ.

The platform integration of the National Production Integrated Combat Management System (MÜREN) developed by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, as well as the ADVENT MÜREN Combat Management Systems, is also being carried out under STM’s responsibility for the Gür-Class submarines. As in the modernization of the Preveze-Class submarines, STM continues to undertake a leading role as the pilot partner in this project.
