The modernisation project of AGOSTA 90B class submarines belonging to Pakistan Naval Forces Command, which is Turkiye’s first engineering export made within the scope of a strategic and advanced technology platform such as submarines, is carried out by our company as the main contractor.
The agreement, which includes the modernisation of three definite submarines, one of which is determined, and two of which are optional for the half-life modernisation of the French-made AGOSTA 90 B class submarines, which was included in the inventory of the Pakistan Navy, was signed between Pakistan Ministry of Defence Production and our company in Rawalpindi/Pakistan on June 22, 2016.
The scope of modernisation is the replacement of the Fire Control System, Sonar Suite, Electronic Warfare System, Radar and Periscope System (Navigation and Assault), Underwater Command & Control System, Steering Station, Static Frequency Converters, Rescue Buoy. Integration design, preparation of related documents, integration activities, tests and experiences along with Integrated Logistics Support services will be provided by our company as the main contractor. The project is realised in Pakistan and all workship is provided by PN Dockyard.
Within the framework of the project, the systems of our domestic companies such as HAVELSAN and ASELSAN are also exported indirectly during the modernisation process.
In the scope of the project, STM is performing necessary modifications on the pressure hull and bulkheads, which are the most critical structures in a submarine, under the supervision of IACS member class societies, by carrying out system-to-system and platform-to-system integrations for various systems, that are being provided by local and foreign companies.
The project was expanded with the contract signed on February 27, 2018, covering the optional 2nd submarine. In February 2021, the third and final AGOSTA 90B-class submarine in the inventory of the Pakistan Navy was included in the project under a signed agreement.
The modernization of the first submarine, PNS/M HAMZA (S-139), was successfully completed and delivered in 2021. The second submarine PNS/M KHALID (S-137) was delivered in December 2022, while modernization work on the third submarine is ongoing.
Notably, the modernized PNS/M HAMZA demonstrated its enhanced capabilities during the SEASPARK-2022 Exercise, where it successfully sank a target frigate with a single torpedo shot.
